The Robert Owen Society has always been inclusive of all of society, people who live here, who visit and who choose us to be a safe haven.
Over the years, in education, we have supported students both at home and abroad. We have trained teachers who are now productive members of our schools and universities. As well as sponsoring those abroad.
Closer to home, one of our directors Will, embarks on regular journeys to the Ukraine taking equipment and supplies. We are very proud of his work and his achievements and watch his journeys with great interest on LinkedIn.
Amelia and Chris more recently carried out some work with the refugee people who came to Hereford to the Three Counties Hotel. They created a Facebook group so that appeals could be put out to local people for items such as clothing, shoes, bags and mobile phones. Others such as St. Martins Church and Hereford City of Sanctuary coordinated the donations which reached where they needed to be, the gentlemen at the hotel.
The groups worked together and worked quickly and very soon the men began to integrate into the community groups, helping with maintenance and gardening. Sports clubs added them to their groups for football and they were kitted out and took part. The City of sanctuary set up lessons for English at the hotel and had good community support and St. Martins set up cooking clubs. The men were able to worship at the Kindle Centre. Herefordshire supports many groups of refugee people and many groups have formed.
The Robert Owen Society also took part in a commission’s report which is being compiled by the Woolf Institute. They attended a meeting presented by Lord Alex Carlile at the Cathedral in Hereford and submitted a report on behalf of the Robert Owen Society. The outcome of the report is still awaited.
